Daiwa Mission Bag review.

Here’s another fishing bag I picked up on ebay.

It has exactly the same reinforced base as the other one  but with a few added features.

Its MOAASSIIVE. Fits heaps in it almost too much considering that more weight on the front = less handing and a higher crashability factor.

photo

Front opening is two clips and a drawstring which is a lot easier access in winter with gloves on.

Three big ass pockets for D-locks and tools and snacks. These are padded too like the big main compartment.

The back has shoulder straps to wear it as a backpack, they are adjustable to shorten them up at the top which makes tucking them away pretty easy.

Its got two LONG straps that go from the shoulder to the bottom that you can secure it to your rack with. I run em back underneath and around the bars.

I shortened the shoulder strap webbing to the minimum to stop it dangling and I replaced all the clips because the ones it came with were shit and broke.

Its cool you can use it as a back pack but to be honest I rarely do. I usually just grab it and haul it one handed cause I’m not going that far. Plus as a back pack it sticks out off your back loads which means knocking people and shit off the supermarket shelves.

Its not very waterproof so Ive given it a nikwax coating and the zips are shit on the pockets but im not using them that much.

Its a bit heavier than the prologic given the added capacity. 1.8kg apposed to 1.5kg

I got it for £17 posted + £5 for some new clips = £22 so a bit cheaper.

So all in all I’ve given it a weighty 6 skulls out of 10. On the skullsramdomwhogivesashit scale. It would’ve scored higher if not for the distinct lack of camo.

Anawhata to Bethells Beach

Taking a knife to a gun fight was Dave Benson’s apt description of taking a cyclocross bike into serious singletrack. Seeing Teva roll up on his awesome Yeti for our overnight excursion into the Waitakere Ranges  made me wonder what I was getting myself into. But the weather was crystal clear and not too hot, so off we went.

The last time I rode this trail, it was really boggy. I’d hoped the week or so of fine, dry weather would have dried the trail out and made it more ridable. It hadn’t.

After bashing through mud pits, bogs, mud holes and some fun sections, we came to a junction. The choice was blast down a trail that put us 5kms from Bethells Beach or try to find a sneaky route through some private land that would spit us out a bit closer. We tried the latter. It wasn’t all bad. The downhill at the start was rad. It was fairly wide but with deep rain ruts snaking all the way down. Negotiating it was a process of trying not to slide into and out of the ruts. Too much fun. This was the wrong way though, so we had to push back up the other side. After a lot of bike pushing we made it back to the junction.

The blast down the last downhill through the bush was the best part of the ride. I got caught out by the rocky sections, blowing through my inch of Continental Cycloking travel at the front and pinch flatting. The pic above is me pumping up my front tyre at the end of the trail. I’d have to do that another half-dozen times — knife in a gunfight.DSCF3072

The Waitakere Ranges at the end of the trail.

We made it to Bethells Beach eventually and then over to Oneil’s Bay where we made camp among some old pohutukawas just off the beach. I got to try out my Hennesy Hammock. I took a bit longer than the dude in the video to set it up, but it happened.DSCF3086

Teva went ultra-light with this snazzy paracord-camo tarp bivy set up.DSCF3100

Cooked a feed, drank some whisky, chilled out.

Thanks for the photos Teva!

Edit: that’s the last photo i took of the evening that i forgot to send justin -teva-

Skulls Townie Update

There’s been the usual irrational shuffling of parts amongst my bikes and boxs of bits.

The Dean has been single-speeded with a paul rear hub and white industries awesome sounding freewheel.

Its got a son schmidt edelux dynamo hub on the front running some shit ass lights that will get upgraded to LED at some point.

A 140mm boner stem from profile racing gives me some varied hand postions with the humpert town bar and the magura hydraulic rim brakes stop me in any weather.

New favourites like shimano NX10 bean chain and Skulls steering spring mod join  old favs like the velo orange porteur rack and make this ride one that should stick around for a while. ……… maybe.

Prologic Carp Fishing Bag Review

You might be wondering why a vegan is reviewing a fishing carryall.
Well after my extensive research and development into porteur racks. I started looking into bags to run with my Velo Orange Porteur.
The custom made bags were a bit pricey for me so I started looking around for alternatives. I was looked at camera bags for a while and a few looked promising but the I stumbled across a shimano fishing bag which was rad but this prologic one is the best Ive found.
Lemme show you why…..

It comes in CAMO

Its got one large padded compartment for all your rare collectables.
And two front pockets for you tools, tubes and maps.

A easy access rear pocket for you keys and headphones

Side net pockets you can stick a small Dlock in.

Heres famous male model plagways heron making hansom look easy.

Top carry handle and padded moulded waterproof bottom.

And the best feature.
It fits perfect on my Velo Orange portuer.

Front flap clips under the rail at the front and the shoulder strap under the rail on the side to hold it down tight.

Perfect fit.

Since I got mine two other dudes have got em. Heres Jammys green one on his surly.

It gets Ten out of Ten on the Skulls meter.
At only £25 its a bargain too.
